" I believe that the coast stretching from Reggio to Gaeta is the most delightful part of Italy; particulari, there is the tract nearest to Salerno, full of little villages, gardens and fountains, called the Amalfi Coast by its inhabitants..." Boccaccio ( Decameron)

| The crusaders, returning from the Palestine, have brought along citrus fuit trees, in order to enjoy it also at home, the taste of the fruit juices which had quenched their thirst during the holy wars. So, the first orange and lemon groves have been planted along the Amalfi Coast where the climate was ideal. Being quite impossible to grow citrus trees in other environments, they've soon become very precious and requested, especially since the medieval medicine had discovered the benefits of the lemon, like its anti-scorbutic properties. At those days, the scurvy was a scourge that decimated crew members of the ship, caused by poor daily diet on-board based on preserved food with low vitamin C content. |
